Why Visit

Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park

Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park is built around the greatest geological wonder in Washington: Dry Falls, a 400-foot cliff face stretching 3.5 miles wide — the ancient site of a waterfall 10 times larger than Niagara. Full-hookup RV sites sit on the shores of Sun Lake with views of the towering basalt canyon walls. The Dry Falls Visitor Center explains the Ice Age floods that carved the Channeled Scablands. Multiple lakes within the park offer swimming, boating, and excellent fishing for rainbow trout.

Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park is centered on Dry Falls — a 400-foot escarpment stretching 3.5 miles wide — the remnant lip of what was once the largest waterfall on Earth, carrying ten times the combined flow of all the world's current rivers during the Missoula Floods. The park's basalt canyon walls and interconnected lakes occupy a section of the Grand Coulee that was scoured by cataclysmic floods during the last ice age, creating a geological museum of columnar basalt, giant ripple marks, and plunge pools now filled with trout. The surrounding sun-baked shrub-steppe is prime habitat for prairie falcon, ferruginous hawk, and long-billed curlew, and the park's lakes support one of the largest concentrations of nesting osprey in central Washington.

🗺️

Waterfront sites on Park Lake (1–50) for boating and swimming fill first. Sites near the Dry Falls viewpoint (80+) are drier and more exposed but convenient for the geological feature. Electric hookup sites in the interior fill quickly for holiday weekends. The resort area offers boat rentals if you don't bring your own. Best in spring when the wildflowers are blooming and waterfowl are most active on the lakes.
