Why Visit

Steamboat Rock State Park

Steamboat Rock State Park is one of Washington's largest and most dramatic parks, built around a 800-foot columnar basalt formation jutting dramatically from Banks Lake in the Grand Coulee. One hundred forty-four full-hookup RV sites in three loops (Sage, Dune, and Bay) are sheltered by rows of protective poplar trees planted to buffer the area's legendary wind. Facilities include ADA-accessible restrooms with showers, a dump station, boat launch, basketball courts, and a seasonal marina store. The trail to the summit plateau of Steamboat Rock rewards with 360-degree views.

Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Steamboat Rock State Park is anchored by the 700-foot mesa of Steamboat Rock, a remnant of the Columbia Plateau that survived the Ice Age Missoula Floods intact while the surrounding terrain was scoured into the dramatic basalt coulee of Banks Lake. Banks Lake is a 27-mile-long irrigation reservoir in the Grand Coulee — one of the world's greatest natural canyons, carved not by a river but by catastrophic floods that occurred repeatedly over 15,000 years during the last ice age. The surrounding landscape is part of the Channeled Scablands, a UNESCO-recognized geological heritage landscape found only in eastern Washington, where the Ice Age flood evidence is so dramatic it was initially rejected by mainstream geologists for decades.

🗺️

Waterfront hookup sites overlooking Banks Lake are among the most coveted in all of eastern WA — book these the day the 6-month window opens. Sites near the boat launch fill next. Upper loop sites (70+) are away from the water but more private. The Steamboat Rock summit hike departs from the campground and offers 360° views of the Grand Coulee. Morning boat fishing for walleye on the lake is exceptional.
