Why Visit

Silver Lake Park

Silver Lake Park is Whatcom County's flagship campground, set on a 140-acre lake surrounded by North Cascades foothills with dramatic views of Mt. Baker (10,781 ft) just 20 miles to the east. The 75 water-and-electric sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet in a mix of open lakeside and forested settings. Silver Lake is a productive trout and bass fishery with a boat launch, swim beach, and on-site boat rentals. The park serves as an excellent staging ground for Mt. Baker Ski Area (snow sports Nov–May) and the Artist Point/Heather Meadows area for summer alpine hiking. Maple Falls (2 miles) has basic supplies; Bellingham offers full services and a Costco 25 miles west on WA-542.

Local parks, local character

Silver Lake Park in Cowlitz County sits on a large, productive lake just 5 miles from the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument visitor center, in the shadow of the volcano whose 1980 eruption deposited significant ash across the surrounding landscape. Silver Lake's shallow, productive water supports exceptional warm-water fishing for bass and perch, and the adjacent wetlands provide critical waterfowl habitat in a landscape that has recovered dramatically from the 1980 eruption's ashfall. Mount St. Helens' ongoing volcanic activity — the lava dome in the crater continues to grow incrementally — makes this one of the few places in the world where visitors can observe active volcanism from a comfortable campground just a few miles from the volcano.
