State Park

Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Saltwater State Park sits on a rare pocket beach on eastern Puget Sound, where a small creek estuary and rocky intertidal zone provide microhabitat in an otherwise heavily developed shoreline between Seattle and Tacoma. The park's underwater state park designation protects an artificial reef that has become a productive scuba diving site for wolf eels, lingcod, and giant Pacific octopus — with clear winter visibility making it one of the better cold-water dive sites in greater Puget Sound. Despite its urban setting, Saltwater's creek mouth provides critical juvenile salmon rearing habitat, and the park's mature alder and cottonwood grove supports year-round great blue heron and bald eagle activity within earshot of the I-5 corridor.

🗺️

Sites 1–25 closest to the Puget Sound beach are the most popular and fill first. The artificial reef just offshore draws a constant flow of scuba divers — the dive wash station makes this a hub for the diving community. Sites can be noisy from the nearby highway; bring earplugs for light sleepers. Best used as a convenient base camp for exploring the greater Seattle-Tacoma area.
