State Park

Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Illahee State Park occupies a forested hillside above Port Orchard Bay on the Kitsap Peninsula, protecting a remarkable stand of old-growth Douglas fir and madrone — the Pacific madrone's northernmost significant grove in Puget Sound. The park's shoreline fronts Port Orchard Bay, where harbor seals regularly haul out on the dock and kelp beds just offshore support populations of lingcod, rockfish, and giant Pacific octopus. The Kitsap Peninsula's forest interior, accessible from the park's upland trails, provides critical habitat linkage between the Hood Canal and Puget Sound marine environments for black-tailed deer, black bear, and breeding marbled murrelet.

Insider Knowledge

Site recommendations from the field

Sourced from first-hand visits, park ranger notes, and RV community reports. Updated when conditions change.

🗺️

Sites 1–15 nearest the pier and Puget Sound beach are the most scenic and fill first. Upper sites have more privacy from dense vegetation. The 349-foot pier is excellent for crabbing and bottomfish; bring crab rings and a cooler. Port Orchard Bay views from the upper sites are lovely at sunset. The park is small enough that no site is far from the waterfront.
