Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Birch Bay State Park fronts a protected shallow bay just 20 miles south of the Canadian border, where a gradual sandy bottom and sunny southern exposure make it one of the warmest and most sheltered saltwater swimming beaches in Washington. The bay's extensive tidal flats expose rich beds of butter clams, littleneck clams, and Dungeness crab at low tide, and the eelgrass beds just offshore are critical nursery habitat for Chinook salmon migrating through Puget Sound. The park sits along the Pacific Flyway, and Birch Bay's protected tidal flats host impressive concentrations of dunlin, sanderlings, and western sandpipers during fall shorebird migration.

🗺️

Sites 1–30 nearest the bay beach fill fastest on summer weekends. Full hookup sites in the 100–148 range are a short walk to the water but offer better utility for multi-night stays. The bay here is one of the warmest saltwater beaches in WA — excellent for kids. Loop B sites are quieter and farther from the day-use crowds. Arrive by Thursday afternoon for summer holiday weekends.
