Rainbow Falls State Park

Rainbow Falls State Park covers 139 acres along the Chehalis River 17 miles west of Chehalis on Highway 6. Eight RV sites have water and electric hookups, with 40 standard sites accommodating rigs up to 60 feet. Flush restrooms, coin-operated showers, and a dump station serve all campers. The park is a popular trailhead for the Willapa Hills Trail — 56 miles of rails-to-trails between Chehalis and South Bend — and a river swimming and fishing destination in summer.

Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Rainbow Falls State Park protects a 139-acre old-growth grove along the South Fork Chehalis River, one of the last stands of ancient forest remaining in the heavily logged Willapa Hills of southwest Washington. The Chehalis River system is one of the most productive salmon and steelhead rivers in Washington, supporting runs of Chinook, coho, and winter steelhead that attract bald eagles and river otters to the park's riverbanks throughout the fall and winter. The surrounding Willapa Hills forest connects to the 56-mile Willapa Hills Trail rail trail, providing a forested corridor for black-tailed deer, black bear, and Roosevelt elk between the Coast Range and the Puget Sound lowlands.

🗺️

Sites along the Chehalis River (1–18) are the park highlight — the suspension bridge and falls are a 5-minute walk. Sites 19–35 are in a quieter forest setting. Very uncrowded compared to coastal parks; last-minute summer bookings are often possible. Excellent for kids who want to explore the river shallows and waterfall. A great off-the-beaten-path option in southwestern Washington.
