Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Brooks Memorial State Park sits in the Little Klickitat River canyon at 3,000 feet elevation in the Simcoe Mountains, where the ponderosa pine and Oregon white oak forest of the Columbia Plateau transitions to the conifer forest of the Cascades' rain shadow eastern slopes. The park's forested canyon is a critical wildlife movement corridor between the Yakama Nation's forested uplands and the Columbia River lowlands, with elk, black bear, and mule deer using the Little Klickitat drainage as a seasonal migration route. The Klickitat River canyon below Brooks Memorial is a designated Wild and Scenic River, supporting wild steelhead and Chinook salmon runs on tribal fishing grounds that have been maintained by the Yakama Nation for thousands of years.

🗺️

Ponderosa pine forest at 3,000 ft makes this a cooler alternative to valley campgrounds. Sites 1–25 along the creek are the nicest with pleasant water sounds. The park is often overlooked, making it a good choice when Yakima Valley parks are full. Excellent birdwatching in the pines — Lewis's woodpecker and white-headed woodpecker are regularly seen. The elevation means cooler nights, even in July.
