Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Maryhill State Park sits on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge, where the river cuts through the Cascade Range in a canyon flanked by 2,000-foot basalt walls — the most powerful remaining salmon river in the western United States. The Columbia River Gorge is the only sea-level crossing of the Cascades, funneling both Pacific weather patterns and bird migration through a narrow corridor that creates legendary windsurfing conditions and concentrates raptors during fall hawk migration. The Rowena Plateau just across the river hosts the Nature Conservancy's Tom McCall Preserve, protecting one of the finest examples of Columbia Gorge native wildflower prairie with over 300 plant species blooming across the basalt grasslands each spring.

🗺️

Waterfront hookup sites 1–35 along the Columbia River fill fastest — reserve these for water views and cooling river breezes. Sites 36–70 are back-in sites with more privacy. The Maryhill Museum of Art across the river (accessible by bridge to Oregon) is one of the most surprising cultural gems in WA — well worth a half-day visit. Bring a fan or generator for hot summer nights; the gorge retains heat.
