Why Visit

Yakima Sportsman State Park

Yakima Sportsman is one of Washington's most conveniently located state park campgrounds — just 3 miles from downtown Yakima with a Costco and full big-box services minutes away. Despite its urban setting, the 247-acre park along the Yakima River feels surprisingly natural, with cottonwood groves and brushy riparian habitat that make it a designated Important Bird Area. The campground offers 37 full-hookup sites accommodating RVs up to 60 feet, plus 37 standard sites. A fish pond is stocked for kids' fishing, and the Yakima River is steps away for fly fishing and wildlife viewing. The park serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the Yakima Valley wine region (200+ wineries within 30 miles), Yakima Canyon, and the east side of the Cascades.

Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Yakima Sportsman State Park occupies a riparian corridor along the Yakima River where the river's cottonwood and willow gallery forest provides a wildlife corridor connecting the forested Cascade foothills to the shrub-steppe of the Columbia Basin. The Yakima River here is a designated blue-ribbon trout stream and one of the most intensively managed steelhead rivers in the Pacific Northwest, with recovery programs working to restore wild runs that once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. The Yakima Canyon just upstream — a 16-mile basalt gorge designated as a Washington State Scenic Highway — provides some of the finest raptor nesting habitat in the Columbia Basin, with nesting golden eagles, prairie falcons, and red-tailed hawks visible on the canyon walls.

🗺️

Yakima River sites (1–25) are the most scenic and fill first. Hookup sites in Loop B are well-equipped. The park's paved path connects directly to the Yakima Greenway Trail System — excellent for cycling into Yakima's wine country and farm stands. A good urban base camp for exploring the Yakima Valley. The river here is excellent for trout fishing and has a boat launch for float trips.
