Secluded RV campground on the North Fork Skokomish River in Olympic National Park with old-growth forest and riverside family trails.
Staircase sits at the end of a scenic road along the North Fork Skokomish River, surrounded by one of the finest remaining lowland old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest. The easy Staircase Rapids Trail follows the river through towering Douglas fir and western red cedar. Kids love wading in the emerald-green river pools in summer.
Staircase sits in the deep eastern valleys of Olympic National Park where the North Fork Skokomish River flows through one of the tallest stands of old-growth Douglas fir on the Olympic Peninsula. The Staircase Rapids — a series of river-sculpted rock formations just upstream from camp — are flanked by old-growth forest that has never been logged, creating a rare example of fully intact Pacific Northwest river-to-ridge ecosystem. The eastern slopes of the Olympics receive far less rainfall than the western rainforest valleys, producing a transitional ecosystem of towering fir and cedar that grades into alpine meadow just a few miles up the trail.
Sourced from first-hand visits, park ranger notes, and RV community reports. Updated when conditions change.
Loop A (sites 1–15) sits closest to the Skokomish River and offers the best ambiance — the river noise drowns out neighbouring campers. Loop B sites are more private with denser tree cover and are better for larger rigs. The Staircase Rapids trail departs right from the campground loop; sites 8–12 are closest to the trailhead. Book Loop A sites first.
