National Park

One of Washington's crown jewels

Cougar Rock sits within Mount Rainier National Park, centered on the 14,411-foot volcano that dominates the entire southern Puget Sound skyline and hosts 25 major glaciers — more glacial ice than any other peak in the lower 48 states. The campground's Longmire district is surrounded by old-growth forest, mineral springs, and the Nisqually River headwaters, with the Paradise subalpine meadows — famous for the most abundant wildflower display in the Pacific Northwest — just 12 miles above. Mount Rainier National Park was designated a National Historic Landmark District for its iconic CCC-era architecture, and the park's ecological diversity ranges from ancient lowland rainforest to permanent glaciers across just 12 miles of elevation gain.

Loop D has several sites with partial Mt Rainier views — the most photogenic spots in the campground. Loop A sites 1–16 are the most private with old-growth cover. Loop E along Cougar Creek is pleasant and slightly cooler than the main loops. All loops are within walking distance of the trailhead to Carter Falls. Book 6 months out for peak summer dates.
