Why Visit

Beacon Rock State Park

Beacon Rock State Park anchors the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge around an iconic 848-foot lava plug — a remnant of ancient volcanic activity. The Woodard Creek area has 5 full-hookup RV sites; the upper campground offers 26 standard first-come sites, all in a gorgeous gorge forest. The signature Beacon Rock Summit Trail makes a 1.8-mile round-trip with nearly 600 feet of gain via an engineered switchback path clinging to the basalt face. Hamilton Mountain offers a more challenging half-day hike with commanding gorge views.

Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Beacon Rock is the 848-foot monolith of solidified magma at the core of an ancient shield volcano, revealed by erosion of the Columbia River Gorge's basalt walls — the second-largest monolith in the world after the Rock of Gibraltar. The park sits in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, a federally protected landscape where the river cuts through the Cascades at sea level — the only such gap in the entire mountain range — creating a conduit for both Pacific weather systems and extraordinary bird migration. Hamilton Mountain directly behind the rock offers one of the finest views of the Columbia Gorge available from any trail in Washington or Oregon, and the gorge below is recognized as one of the premier windsurfing destinations in the world.

🗺️

Sites 1–20 closest to Beacon Rock and the trailheads are most convenient. Upper loop sites (21–35) have more seclusion and tree cover. Columbia Gorge winds can be strong — bring extra tent stakes for any windward site. The Hamilton Mountain trail from camp is one of the best gorge hikes. The campground is a 5-minute walk from the Beacon Rock summit trail, one of the most dramatic 2-mile hikes in WA.
