Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Battle Ground Lake occupies a maar crater — an extinct volcanic explosion vent that filled with water — on the Cascades' western foothills, making it one of the few crater lakes in Washington State with full campground facilities. The surrounding 280-acre park encompasses second-growth Douglas fir forest that is steadily recovering toward old-growth character, with the 5-mile trail system looping through forest that connects to the broader Southwest Washington Trail network. The Clark County landscape surrounding the park has been dramatically transformed by the Portland metro area's expansion, making Battle Ground Lake State Park one of the most important remaining natural refuges for wildlife in southwest Washington's urban fringe.

Insider Knowledge

Site recommendations from the field

Sourced from first-hand visits, park ranger notes, and RV community reports. Updated when conditions change.

🗺️

Sites near the volcanic lake shore (1–15) fill first and offer the best swimming and fishing access. Loop B sites (16–35) are forested and quieter — better for those seeking shade on hot days. The warm lake is excellent for families with small children. Book well in advance for summer holiday weekends; this popular SW Washington park fills completely. The lake fishing for trout can be excellent in spring.
